WhereNet’s Scrap Tracking & Management System Eliminates Labor-Intensive Processing of Scrap Parts, Resulting in Reduced Material Loss and Increased Productivity
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Dec. 6, 2005—WhereNet Corp., the leader of wireless solutions for tracking and managing enterprise assets, announced today general availability of the WhereNet Scrap Tracking & Management System (STMS) that enables automotive manufacturers to automate the processing of scrap materials in vehicle assembly, powertrain, and metal fabrication facilities in support of lean manufacturing initiatives.
The industry-first STMS software eliminates error-prone, manual, paper-based processes when managing non-conforming materials, resulting in reduced material loss, increased labor productivity, and more efficient manufacturing operations. Leveraging a single instance of WhereNet software, Ford Motor Company is one of WhereNet’s first customers for STMS.

“Scrapping” Old Processes Leads to Leaner Ways
Typically, when workers come across “non-conforming” materials, better known as scrap parts, they document the scrap material on hand-written notes. Then, weeks later, another worker logs this information into the material system. This very slow, delayed process is further compromised by lost, inaccurate, and often illegible scrap tags, resulting in numerous inefficiencies, including: inflated balance of quality material on hand, excessive material cycle losses, poor supplier cost recovery, daily manual inventory audits, delayed response to problem resolution, and low labor productivity.
The WhereNet STMS solution standardizes the scrap management process by initially modeling the build information of the product, including all of the parts that comprise it, into the system. Then, when scrap is “created” (either when a part is damaged during the assembly process or when it arrives from a supplier as non-conforming material), the assembly team member clicks on a user-friendly screen in the software identifying the part as scrap.
At this point, the scrap becomes “visible” to fellow team members assigned to building that product, as well as to assembly and material managers who now have access to real-time information about the condition of the work in process. This data can be mined to perform root cause analysis about when, where, and why scrap was created, driving process improvements for both the manufacturer and the supplier.
