WHERENET ADDS MORE DISTRIBUTION/LOGISTICS CUSTOMERS; WHERESOFT YARD MANAGEMENT SYSTEM NOW MANAGES MORE THAN 350,000 TEU CONTAINERS ANNUALLY FOR LARGE CROSSDOCK FACILITIES

Performance Team, a Leading Logistics Provider for Major Retailers, Expands Use of WhereNet to Automate Processes and Increase Throughput

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Nov. 6, 2007—WhereNet Corp., a Zebra Technologies company (NASDAQ: ZBRA) and the leader in wireless solutions for tracking and managing enterprise assets, announced today that Performance Team, a leading logistics provider for major retailers and manufacturers, has expanded use of the WhereNet® yard management system (YMS) at its South Gate and Seattle distribution facilities, which serve the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach and Seattle/Tacoma respectively. The WhereSoft™ Yard system now manages more than 350,000 twenty-foot-equivalency (TEU) unit marine shipping containers annually for transload customers on the east and west coasts of the United States.

Performance Team started utilizing the WhereNet yard management system in 2005 to optimize operations at its Santa Fe Springs transload facility. Due to the system’s success at that facility, Performance Team recently deployed WhereSoft Yard version 5.0 at its South Gate and Seattle distribution facilities, in advance of this year’s peak season, which is projected to bring more record amounts of inbound cargo from Asia.

“WhereNet plays a critical role in improving the efficiency of our transload operations as we continue to move an ever-increasing amount of freight for several of the country’s largest retailers,” said Charles Kerr, senior operations manager for Performance Team. “The intelligence of WhereSoft Yard, combined with specific business rules that we enter into the system, allows us to automate more than 90 percent of our dock door transactions. The YMS helps us reduce labor costs and increase productivity and throughput — proven benefits that we expect will lead to a complete return on investment in less than one year.”

The deployment at South Gate took a total of three weeks and marked WhereNet’s smoothest yard deployment ever. WhereNet installed the server software, map, and zone definitions in the first week. Performance Team took one week to configure the system by creating business rules, adding carriers, and building forms. During the third week, Performance Team and WhereNet conducted formal training with three user groups (office, warehouse, and equipment control personnel) and launched the system.

Featuring user-defined business rules to automate workflow in medium-to-large yards, WhereSoft Yard serves as an advanced planning and execution system. Depending on the volume and velocity of the yard operation, the solution can be used with or without the benefit of WhereNet’s ISO 24730 and IEEE 802.11 (Wi Fi)-based real-time locating system (RTLS) technology.

Real-Time Location Brings More Intelligence to the Yard

NYK Logistics Inc., a leading third-party logistics provider, also uses WhereSoft Yard to manage its transload facilities, but benefits from additional “intelligence” as it combines the WhereNet active RFID, real-time locating system (RTLS) technology as part of the overall yard management solution. NYK Logistics recently migrated to WhereSoft Yard 5.0 at its Long Beach, California, facility, and went live with the same system at its new Chesapeake, Virginia, site, which processes more than 45,000 truck-size cargo containers annually.

Performance Team and similar, high-velocity, high-throughput crossdock customers realize a host of benefits from WhereSoft Yard, including:

  • Increased productivity for equipment control personnel, yard drivers, and warehouse personnel
  • Increased yard velocity and capacity
  • Improved equipment utilization and door turns
  • Reduced driver time on site
  • Decreased manual yard checks
  • Automatic email notification to carriers, resulting in more effective onsite equipment management
  • Better customer satisfaction through more timely deliveries

“In order to efficiently operate high-volume, high-velocity facilities for the world’s largest retailers, transloaders are relying on WhereNet to reduce risk by removing the potential for human error as much as possible,” Steve Raymond, vice president of product marketing for WhereNet. “WhereNet has become the industry’s de facto YMS solution provider as our business-rules driven solution offers the unique ability to automate time-sensitive yard moves, resulting in more shipments being processed with fewer resources than ever before and retailers experiencing increased service levels.”
