WHERENET DEMONSTRATES SECURE ELECTRONIC SEAL CAPABILITY FOR 2.4-GHZ NETWORK, BOLSTERS GLOBAL PORT SECURITY SOLUTIONS

Standards-Compliant e-Seal Technology Will Enable WhereNet Customers to Protect Against Loss, Tampering, and Theft of Containers at Ports and Logistics Facilities

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Oct. 12, 2005—WhereNet Corp., the leader of wireless solutions for tracking and managing enterprise assets, announced today that it has successfully completed tests of an electronic seal (e-Seal). The e-Seal solution is compliant with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) 371.1 real-time locating system (RTLS) standard, operating at 2.4-GHz. The e-Seals were developed with E.J. Brooks Company, the world leader in innovation, research, and manufacture of security seals to the transportation, retail, money-handling and utility industries. The WhereNet e-Seal solution relies on the company’s ANSI-compliant, active RFID, RTLS technology, which is already in use at ports and logistics facilities across the United States and Europe.

“While RFID/RTLS will remain crucial to location tracking in the supply chain, experienced RFID systems providers like WhereNet are well positioned to expand their offerings to address increasing global security concerns,” said Michael J. Liard, RFID Practice Director for Venture Development Corporation. “WhereNet’s solutions that track e-Seals from terminal to point of acceptance, coupled with its ability to leverage a widely accepted, longer range radio frequency like 2.4 GHz, positions WhereNet as an important RFID/RTLS player in meeting global maritime and port security needs.”

An e-Seal is a radio frequency device that transmits container information as it passes a reader device, and issues alerts and error conditions if the container has been tampered with or damaged. E-Seals serve both commercial and security interests by tracking commercial container shipments from their point of origin, while en route, and to their final destination and point of customs clearance.

WhereNet provides real-time monitoring and reporting capabilities by:

  • Reading e-Seals as containers are loaded or unloaded from ships, or received or delivered through gate complexes.
  • Continuously reporting an e-Seal’s status throughout the duration of the container’s stay at a logistics facility.
  • Locating an e-Seal within a logistics facility or in a specific lane as the container is entering or departing the site.

“Many technology vendors are offering piecemeal solutions — some focused on security, others focused on logistics — that leave companies with more questions than answers,” said John Rosen, director of product marketing for WhereNet. “WhereNet’s standards-compliant technology and proven track record reduce the risk in successfully implementing solutions that drive both productivity gains and enhanced security through a single, integrated 2.4-GHz wireless network.”

Single System, Multiple Benefits
Because it requires only a single radio frequency antenna to receive the e-Seal signal, a basic WhereNet e-Seal solution is extremely cost-effective.  Alternatively, the functionality can easily be added to a previously installed WhereNet infrastructure. To date, WhereNet has installed more than 500 receivers in marine terminals and logistics centers in Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland, California; Seattle and Tacoma, Washington; and Anchorage, Alaska. The company is building a similar ecosystem of installations on the East Coast and recently completed an installation at the NYK Logistics Norfolk transload facility near the Port of Virginia. In addition, WhereNet continues to expand across Europe; last month, the company announced what will be the world’s largest active RFID installation, at the Port of Rotterdam in The Netherlands.

Future versions of the WhereNet e-Seal system will be able to receive signals from third-party technology providers. “WhereNet realizes that our customers require an open network that can support the implementation of many technologies. The systems we provide will continue to improve operational efficiency while meeting evolving and mandated security requirements,” said Mark Irvine, senior vice president of the transportation, distribution and logistics division for WhereNet.

e-Seals and RFID/RTLS Technology
The e-Seal solution relies on WhereNet’s proven active RFID, RTLS globally deployed technology. The hardware is fully complaint with ANSI standards and successfully works in the most demanding transportation and industrial environments. Operating in the globally allocated 2.4-GHz band, WhereNet has deployed tens of thousands of location sensors in more than 100 facilities worldwide.

WhereNet already provides a proven technology for constant, global, inter-modal tracking of containers from load to unload, with intrusion and radiation monitoring. By supporting e-Seals, the company has reaffirmed its commitment to meeting all of the wireless management needs of marine terminals and logistics centers.
