LEADING PUBLICATIONS
Computerworld, Frontline Solutions, and Supply Chain Systems Salute WhereNet Customers for Dramatic
Productivity Gains; Strong ROI also Realized as a Result of WhereNet’s Wireless Location-Based
Technology
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Sept. 30, 2003—WhereNet Corp., the leader of wireless solutions for
tracking and managing enterprise assets, announced today that IDG’s Computerworld has selected
Ford Motor Company/WhereNet as a winner in the 2003 “Best Practices in Mobile & Wireless”
Awards Program, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard. The two companies are recognized in a special supplement
in the September 29th issue of Computerworld. Also in September, Frontline Solutions magazine saluted
Associated Food Stores/WhereNet as a winner of its inaugural Supply Chain Superstars award; and Supply
Chain Systems magazine will feature WhereNet and its customer, ES3, as one of ten Supply Chain Innovators
in its October 2003 issue.
Recognized for its use of the WhereNet® WhereCall™ wireless parts replenishment solution
in more than 50 factories around the world, Ford was one of only two winners selected in the “financial
payback” category and one of just ten companies overall to be honored by Computerworld. Ford
will receive additional recognition at Computerworld’s Mobile & Wireless World Conference,
May 24-27, 2004, in Palm Desert, California.
According to the September 29th issue of Computerworld, the WhereCall application has helped Ford
increase safety, improve quality and reporting, and realize “significant savings through lower
installations costs, increased operation efficiency, lower inventory quantities, and increased manufacturing
flexibility. The wireless call system also costs half to three-fourths of what a similar system using
wired components would cost. In addition, the system can be installed in a quarter of the time it
took to install the previous systems and line re-balancing operations can be done in much less time
with virtually no additional capital expenditures for hardware and equipment.”
“The winners of the ‘Best Practices’ Award have achieved extraordinary success
in deploying mobile and wireless technologies,” said Leo Leger, vice president, strategic initiatives,
Computerworld. “The accomplishments of these companies will allow other IT leaders to identify
specific challenges within their own organizations and implement the most cutting-edge technology
solutions that will directly enhance their business.”
WhereNet Yard Solution Awarded Superstar Status
Associated Food Stores (AFS) enjoyed front-of-the-room recognition on September 16th at an awards
ceremony at the Frontline Solutions International Supply Chain Week Conference and Expo. Frontline
Solutions began its Supply Chain Superstars program this year to honor five companies that displayed
the most impressive implementations and justified ROI of supply chain technologies.
AFS uses WhereNet’s wireless real-time locating system to locate, manage, and track truck
trailers and equipment throughout its 600-acre distribution center. By leveraging WhereNet’s
technology, AFS has “eliminated trailer leasing, cut its number of tractors from 92 to 62, reduced
the number of drivers from 123 to 83, reduced weekly deliveries from 1500 to fewer than 1000, saved
$100,000 in annual spoilage, and realized an annual fuel savings of more than $500,000,” according
to Frontline Solutions. When you add up all of these operational benefits, AFS achieved a complete
return on its WhereNet investment in six months.
WhereNet Honored as a Supply Chain Innovator for Third Consecutive Year
Supply Chain Systems selected ES3/WhereNet for the 2003 Top 10 Supply Chain Innovators Award and will
feature the companies in its October issue. This mark’s the third consecutive year that WhereNet
has received this prestigious industry award.
The publication recognized ES3’s innovative use of WhereNet’s WhereSoft yard management
system bolstered by its real-time locating system (RTLS) technology. ES3 is a supply chain services
firm with a two million square foot distribution center in York, Pennsylvania that delivers multi-manufacturer
consolidated orders to retail customers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions within 24 hours.
Active, wireless WhereTag devices are attached to every trailer as it enters the yard to help automate
yard management, dispatch, auditing, door scheduling, carrier appointing, and equipment inventory
management. Benefits of the system include improved asset optimization, increased yard throughput,
and better deployment of labor.
“These awards are especially gratifying as they are all based on customer applications of
our technology and the strong value associated with it,” said Dan Doles, president and CEO of
WhereNet Corp. “While we have developed a very sophisticated, patented technology and continue
to add new functionality every year, WhereNet is foremost a solutions company, solving very painful
business problems that companies face on a daily basis. We base everything we do on a proven return
on investment methodology, and we consistently deliver a complete ROI in less than one year.”
