WhereNet’s Wireless Real-Time Locating System Technology and Rules-Based Yard Management System Drive Unprecedented Efficiencies at Spacious, High-Volume NYK Logistics Transload Facility Near Ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—May 26, 2004—WhereNet Corp., the leader of wireless solutions for tracking and managing enterprise assets, announced today that IDG’s Computerworld has selected NYK Logistics/WhereNet as a winner in the 2004 “Best Practices in Mobile & Wireless” Awards Program. The two companies received this prestigious award during an on-stage presentation at this week’s Mobile & Wireless World conference in Palm Desert, California. NYK Logistics and WhereNet will also be featured in a special supplement in the June 14 th issue of Computerworld. Earlier this month, Target Stores recognized NYK Logistics as its Deconsolidator of the Year at the annual Target Corporation Transportation Conference held May 12 -13, 2004 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
“Unequivocally, we can state that we would not have received such accolades and completed our most efficient year ever without WhereNet,” said Rick Pople, vice president of operations for NYK Logistics. “With Target’s continued growth and imports on the rise every year, we had to find a way to transform our operations to maintain premium customer service and win new business. WhereNet’s technology has dramatically impacted almost every phase of our operation, providing us with a completely wireless ‘command and control center’ and automated yard management solution that enables us to expedite shipments to 22 Target distribution centers across the country.”
This marks the second straight year that a WhereNet customer has received the Mobile & Wireless Award. Last year, Computerworld recognized Ford Motor Company for its use of the WhereNet ® WhereCall™ wireless parts replenishment solution in more than 50 factories around the world. Besides NYK Logistics, other Mobile & Wireless Award winners for 2004 include Allstate Insurance, Barnes & Noble and Fidelity Investments.
“Mobile and wireless technologies are driving greater efficiencies in a diverse range of enterprises, from retail to financial services to travel,” said Leo Leger, vice president of Strategic Initiatives for Computerworld. “Our ‘Best Practices in Mobile & Wireless’ Award Program winners have risen to the challenges inherent in mobile and wireless technology – like interoperability – to deliver strategic value across their organizations and demonstrate the promise of mobile and wireless solutions.”
Award-Winning Application Delivers Rapid ROI
NYK Logistics operates a 70-acre yard with more than 1,200 parking slots and 250 dock doors and manages more than 50,000 inbound ocean freight containers from the Port of Los Angeles/Long Beach and 30,000 outbound trailers per year. During its peak season (from early October to late November), the company averages more than 1,400 gate transactions daily, transloading freight from 11 different steamship lines to more than a dozen domestic carriers. In one 24-hour period during the 2003 peak season, NYK Logistics conducted a record 1,842 gate transactions.
NYK Logistics realized a complete return on its WhereNet investment in less than one year through a multitude of breakthrough savings and benefits, including:
Eliminating 100% of costs associated with manual yard searches and data collection
Increasing daily throughput of the yard by 38% during the Fall 2003 peak season
Improving gate personnel and hostler productivity by 50%
Reducing domestic turn times by four hours and eliminating almost all manual communication related to the process
Reducing time spent by drivers on site to complete a double transaction by 66% – drivers never have to leave their cabs as they receive tickets upon entry instructing them where to drop their container or trailer and bills of lading upon departure for loaded trailers outbound to distribution centers
Reducing yard inventory of trailers and in the process, saving 40-60 parking spots in the yard (depending on the time of year)
Increasing quantity of more profitable, round-trip transactions for drivers as the system triggers automatic emails to carriers and drayage partners notifying them when empty containers or loaded trailers are available for pick up
Increasing controller productivity as the rules engine makes most of the decisions about resource allocation – the controller only needs to manage exceptions
Achieving a higher level of customer service, resulting in increased revenue through new business
Providing access to real-time data by partners across the logistics network to drive better decisions and resource allocation
“For a world-class company like Target to recognize one of its vendors as the best in its class is remarkable. NYK Logistics is setting the standard that all other transloaders should strive to achieve, and to know that we play a critical role in NYK’s best practices is very rewarding,” said Dan Doles, president and CEO of WhereNet Corp. “While we have received dozens of industry accolades in recent years, the one-two punch of the Computerworld and Target awards rank near the top. We look forward to delivering additional high-value solutions that help improve our customers’ business around the world.”
